SCB continues our long-standing relationship with United Airlines as the design partner for the new luxury passenger lounge, United Polaris. SCB incorporated numerous hospitality-level amenities into the lounge to support United’s vision for an unprecedented standard of guest services.
A key component of the airline’s re-imagined international business class experience, the lounges will be strategically deployed in nine airports worldwide. The first location, at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, opened in December 2016. SCB focused on providing exclusivity, personalization, and user-comfort for United’s premier customers.
The primary design objective was to generate a sense of continuity between the on-board cabin environment and the lounge experience. SCB achieved this through thoughtful spatial planning, creating different zones within the 12,000-square-foot lounge that celebrate the excitement of travel. SCB’s studied use of materials, distinctive lighting, and impactful art creates a truly differentiated experience for travelers. Set into the ceiling of the lounge’s reception area, a sparkling, celestial sculpture by Wolfgang Buttress signals that guests are entering a unique and upgraded space. The commissioned artwork references the Polaris star brand and is also inspired by a map of Chicago, the flagship location.
